With more than 25 years of experience in a variety of publishing disciplines, Eric Johnston brings a unique perspective and passion to the media industry. Having served in markets across the country, his experience includes that of photojournalist, print and digital designer, IT specialist, advertising sales manager, audience development director, digital media business leader, mid-market Publisher and, Chief Operating Officer.

In his current role as President of the Western Division for the Adams Publishing Group, Johnston oversees operations for the privately-held company’s two-dozen daily and weekly titles in the western United States. Before joining Adams Publishing, he served as Chief Operating Officer of the Pioneer News Group (acquired by Adams in Nov. 2017). Prior to coming to Pioneer, Johnston served as the Publisher and President of The Modesto Bee and the Merced Sun-Star, McClatchy Company newspapers located in California’s San Joaquin Valley from 2009-14.

Throughout his career, Johnston has been at the front edge of a number of industry-changing initiatives, including the development, integration, and maturation of online business models, the introduction of digital photography and pagination into the newspaper production environment and ongoing workflow and process improvements, including regionalized editing, design, and customer service operations.

Johnston serves as audit chair and member of the Board of Directors for the Local Media Consortium and is a board member for the Local Media Association. He has also served in leadership capacities for a variety of industry and community-service organizations and is an Eagle Scout.

A graduate of California State University, Fresno, Johnston holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism. He and his wife, Susan, have two daughters: Brittany, a U.S. Navy veteran and Registered Nurse, and Morgan, currently a graduate-level health care student.
